Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), the country's national news agency was launched on January 1, 1972. The Dhaka bureau of the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) was turned into the national news agency of the new country.
Beginning with a small strength in the head office in Dhaka and a bureau in Chittagong, BSS now has bureaus in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Bagura, Khulna, Barishal, Rangamati and Sylhet also.
The national news agency has its correspondents in all the 64 administrative districts of the country. The agency functions almost round the clock to disseminate national, international, political, economic, development and other news to nearly 50 subscribers across the country.
BSS subscribes to international wire services AFP and exchanges news with Press Trust of India (PTI), Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), Xinhua, the official news agency of China, Bernama of Malaysia and TransData of Australia.
BSS transmits news features including IPS features.
BSS introduced Bangla news service in 1999 in the backdrop of swelling number of Bangla newspapers in Bangladesh.

Main Activities of the Agency
Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) has been working as the National News
Agency of the country since the independence of Bangladesh.
The main task of BSS is to collect news from different sources covering local,
national and international issues and events and distributing those primarily to
the government offices and clients in print and electronic media.
The news and features collected, written and edited by a group of highly
professional journalists are regularly distributed in Bangla and English to
Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television, the Prime Minister Office (PMO),
foreign offices, Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) besides different newspapers
and television channels.
BSS also provides different feature and photo services.

Regulations and Process
a) Any newspaper or electronic media, interested in taking services from BSS
both in English and Bangla, needs to apply to the Managing Director and Chief
Editor of the Agency.
b) Upon receiving the application, BSS authority issues a letter to the applicant
for arranging necessary equipments including lease line, computer and internet
service within 7 (seven) days.
c) BSS signs an agreement with subscriber after setting up necessary equipment,
receiving security money and one month service charge in advance. English or
Bangla news services are provided in three days of signing of the contract.
d) Any newspaper or electronic media interested in taking services from BSS
only in English or in Bangla, needs to apply to the Managing Director and Chief
Editor of the Agency.
e) The process of taking services is as same as for both the services.

About covering/collecting news
Any group, department or organization can request the chief reporter of the agency for covering events including meeting, rally, seminar, symposium for writing reports and features. The chief reporter assigns reporter considering importance of the events.
